Denture Relines
A loose denture makes it harder to chew and may cause infections, irritation, or sores in your mouth. If your denture is loose, you may need a temporary laboratory reline. A temporary reline is done in the office- chair site reline. The soft material that is used to make this reline helps keep the denture close and comfortable. It is removed when a laboratory reline is needed.
A laboratory reline is made with the same type of material used to make a denture-acrylic. This procedure takes more time and is also called a permanent reline. A reline does not change the appearance of your dentures, just the fit. A reline does not make the lower denture fit "tighter" but it does fit the tissue closer and better.
Immediate Dentures
An immediate denture is made before your final teeth are extracted, and placed in your mouth right after extraction. It prevents swelling and acts like a Band-Aid. The denture should not be removed for 24 hours and a postoperative visit is required to check patient healing and adjustment to the denture. As the healing process continues, your gums will shrink. It is very important to keep dental appointments for adjustments. The new denture may be uncomfortable for several weeks. It takes time and patience to learn to eat with new dentures. Speaking with new dentures may also be difficult in the beginning.
During the healing process, the denture may become loose and should be relined. Soft reline/chair time reline/can be done as a temporary reline in the office until a hard lab reline can be made. When healing is complete, about 3-6 months in most cases, a hard lab reline is recommended. This is done in a material similar to the original denture.
An immediate denture has several advantages:
*You don't appear in public without teeth
*Your natural teeth can be duplicated in shape, color and arrangement of natural teeth
*The healing process is much faster
Complete Denture/Partial Denture
Complete dentures are used to replace teeth when there are no teeth remaining. Making a quality complete set of dentures can take an average of 5 appointments. Each patient has unique ethetic requirements; each patient has a unique shape of their oral tissue and relationship of upper and lower jaws.
Removable partial dentures/RPD/fills in the space created by missing teeth. When teeth are missing, the remaining ones can change position, drifting into surrounding space. There are two kinds of partial dentures; acrylic partial also called temporary, and partial dentures with metal as a base. Each partial is made to fit your mouth. RPD's are more stable and retentive; they sit on the teeth, as well as being attached to them. The differences between partials are the materials that are used to support denture teeth and retain the RPD in the mouth.
After insertion of the new denture it will take time to get used to it. New dentures always need a few adjustments and it takes time to learn how to eat, speak and wear your new dentures, especially the lower one. The lower denture never fits tight and does not have 'suction' like an upper one. You do not chew with your denture as you would with your natural teeth.
